LACOMBE, La. Deputies answering a domestic dispute call confronted a man who claimed he was armed with a gun and intended to kill responding officials, according to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office.

Around 11:15 p.m. on Monday, the sheriff's office received a 911 call regarding a dispute between Daniel J. Orgeron, 28, and his girlfriend near at their residence on S. Mill Road.

Orgeron, who had been drinking and self-medicating throughout the day due to a toothache, was in the driveway when deputies arrived, STPSO said.

He held his hand behind his back and refused to show it when instructed to by the two responding deputies, the sheriff's office said.

Orgeron told deputies he had a gun and began approaching them in an aggressive manner, according to the STPSO. One of the deputies shot him in the stomach with a single shotgun slug.

Orgeron was found to be unarmed and continued to fight with deputies as medical aid was given.

He was transported to University Hospital in New Orleans and medical personnel determined his injuries to be not life-threatening. On Tuesday, he was recovering after surgery, deputies said.

His girlfriend was treated at Lacombe Heart Hospital for a fractured hand and swelling around her right eye due to an earlier altercation with Orgeron.

She had two minor children, unrelated to Orgeron, who were in the home at the time but were uninjured.

Upon release from the hospital, Orgeron will be booked with second degree battery, domestic abuse battery child endangerment, aggravated assault and resisting an officer.

He has been arrested previously for battering his mother, who was confined to a wheelchair and suffered from muscular dystrophy, during a 2011 domestic dispute.

In this incident, Orgeron had also indicated that he wanted to commit suicide by causing a law enforcement officer to take his life.

He had communicated similar intentions to his girlfriend during a telephone conversation in the latter months of 2011 when he said he wanted a St. Tammany Parish deputy to kill him.
