BELLECHASSE, La. - A Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office deputy was fired after he was charged with sexual battery and malfeasance in office - sexual conduct, according to the sheriff's office.

Elijah Gary, 29, of Port Sulphur, was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a 29-year-old female prisoner, according to the sheriff's office. The incident occurred on Nov. 20.

'The Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Bureau conducted a thorough investigation, which included collecting potential evidence from the victim and Gary. The evidence was submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Laboratory for processing and analysis,' said a statement from the sheriff's office.

A report from the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab revealed Gary's DNA was recovered from the victim, according to the sheriff's office.

Gary was arrested Friday by the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Bureau and booked into the Belle Chasse Lock-up in lieu of a $50,000 bond.

He had been employed by the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office since July 2007.Recently, he was assigned to Second District Patrol Division as a deputy.
