NEW ORLEANS On Friday, a man was fatally shot during an apparent ransacking of his Lower Garden District home, according to the New Orleans Police Department.

Just before 1 a.m., officers responded to a call of a 'male down' bleeding from the head in the living room of a residence in the 2000 block of Prytania Street, police said.

The man had been shot once and was pronounced dead on the scene, according to the NOPD.

The victim's white 2008 Jeep Cherokee with Louisiana license plate number WPR 618 was missing from the location, police said.

Just after 6 a.m., police returned to the scene and towed away a white Dodge Charger. It is unknown whether or not this is connected to the incident.

Investigators are in the process of gathering evidence and information to identify the persons responsible and a motive.
