NEWORLEANS- Former state legislator Girod Jackson III of Marrero is scheduled to be arraigned on federal tax crimes Sept. 5.

Jackson resigned from the state House on Thursday when he was charged with a felony count of federal tax fraud and two misdemeanor counts of failure to file tax returns.

Jackson will appear before a federal magistrate judge at his arraignment. There, he will have to plead not guilty, but because he was charged in a bill of information, he is expected to change his plea to guilty shortly after that.

Jackson's attorney Jim Boren said he and his client have been talking with the government for some time. But he declined to say if his client is cooperating on other matters. Jackson has been implicated in several government audits and is under investigation separately for allegedly overbilling a state Katrina recovery program, but he has never been charged with any crimes or ethics violations in those matters.
