NEW ORLEANS -- An off-duty New Orleans police officer is on suspension after he was allegedly drunk during a traffic accident early Sunday morning.

The accident happened at about 2:30 a.m. on the Twin Spans eastbound.

Remi Braden, a spokeswoman for the New Orleans Police Department, said 38-year-old Jayson Germann was driving his unmarked, departmental take-home car at the time of the accident.

A Louisiana State Police spokesperson said Germann lost control of his vehicle and hit the left side guardrail. He then swerved to the right and hit a 1991 Geo passenger, driven by 53-year-old Frank Hyde.

The NOPD did not release the results of the breathalyzer test, but Braden said Germann was over the legal limit. He faces charges of driving while intoxicated and reckless operation of a motor vehicle.

Hyde is also facing a DWI charge.

Braden said Germann is on emergency suspension without pay until the Public Integrity Bureau completes its investigation. Germann was most recently a part of the NOPD's Gang Intelligence Unit.

According to Louisiana State Police, there were no injuries.

Germann and Hyde were booked into the 9th ward jail in Slidell.
