BELLE CHASSE, La. -- Currently, in Plaquemines Parish there are approximately 42 registered sex offenders, and parish officials want residents to know where they reside, so they are requiring offenders to display signs in their yards on Halloween night.

'We do our best to make sure sex offenders report current residential addresses. This important information can be found by visiting our website. For their protection, citizens are able to see who the registered sex offenders are and where they are living,' said Sheriff Lonnie Greco in a statement released Wednesday.

'The mapping and address feature found on the website pinpoints exactly where an offender lives,' he added.

Citizens will also find many other beneficial tools such as the ability to sign up for free automatic email notifications informing you if an offender moves within a specified radius of any address you register.

'If you aren't planning on trick-or-treating in your neighborhood, but will be in a family or friend's neighborhood, register their address beforehand so you know which houses to avoid. You can register any and all of the addresses where your children spend a lot of time; for example friend's, grandparents', or babysitter's addresses' says Sheriff Greco.

In addition, on Halloween night, the Sheriff's Office requires all sex offenders to display a sign in their front yard. Offenders are not supposed to have their front porch lights on, nor are they to answer the door. For the safety of residents and their children, if a sign is displayed on a front lawn, avoid the home and do not trick-or-treat at this residence, advises the sheriff's office.

Sheriff Lonnie Greco encourages everyone to have a fun and safe Halloween.
