NEW ORLEANS -- The bill to reduce penalties for marijuana possession has gone up in smoke.

The Senate Judiciary Committee was joined by district attorneys and sheriffs from all over the state who oppose any type of penalty reduction for pot.

They called marijuana a gateway drug, which would lead to the abuse of harder substances.

The bill's sponsor, New Orleans state Sen. J.P. Morrell quoted another supporter, Monroe state Sen. Freddie Mills, who said that 'a donut could be a gateway to obesity.'
