SLIDELL,La. -- When dozens of proud friends and family converged on Daney Street in Slidell last Saturday, they expected a nice celebration.

What they got was chaos.

'This is what started out to be a joyous occasion,' said Slidell Police Chief Randy Smith, 'A party for a female who had been accepted into college that turned bad after an argument between two individuals.'

Officers say at about 2 a.m., a gunman shot 26-year-old Jamar Wilson multiple times, including in the back, leaving him on a driveway clinging to life.

His loved ones thought the worst, but on Monday, 'He's doing OK,' said Wilson's grandmother Johnnie Mixon, 'But he's paralyzed from his waist down.'

Police say the shooter actually hid in a wooded area to prevent the victim from knowing what was about to happen. The police chief calls it an ambush.

'He thought the argument may have been over,'Smith said. 'The individuals responsible left the scene, then shortly thereafter, returned. Seems like this is now another senseless shooting where this individual victim is lucky to be alive.'

Wilson's family is thankful for that, but now wants help getting justice.

'Nothing has come in on this crime. I'm pleading and I'm begging, if they have any information on this would they please come forward,' said Mixon.

Smith said, 'We always could use the help from citizens here in the community.'

The hope is community's outrage over the crime will help solve it and then prevent it from happening again.

If you can help police solve this crime, call Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111 or submit a tip using Slidell PD's app. All information can be submitted anonymously and could lead to a cash reward.
