Now that the Labor Day weekend is behind us, it's time to focus on politics. That's the topic of this week's Commentary by Eyewitness News Political Analyst and Gambit columnist Clancy DuBos.

Labor Day traditionally kicks off the campaign season in Louisiana, but this year things began early.

Supporters and opponents of Sen. Mary Landrieu have been advertising for months. Landrieu is a prime target for Republicans. She chairs the powerful, and very important to Louisiana, Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. All her elections have been cliffhangers, and this one promises to be no different.

Locally, the hottest races appear to be for district attorney in St. Bernard Parish and on the Northshore, in St. Tammany and Washington parishes. In both those races, long-time incumbents chose not to seek re-election.

Area Congressmen Steve Scalise and Cedric Richmond have opposition, but the congressional races getting the most attention are those featuring former Governor Edwin Edwards and incumbent Congressman Vance McAllister. Edwards served more than 8 years in federal prison for corruption. McAllister was caught on video kissing a married staffer. Both are front-runners.

You can't make up stuff like this, folks. It's truly never dull in Louisiana politics.
