PONCHATOULA, La. - A Westwego man was crushed in the front seat of his 18-wheeler when another 18-wheeler hit him from behind, forcing the trailer into the cab portion of the truck, according to Louisiana State Police.

John Nelson, 53, had pulled onto the shoulder of I-55 in Ponchatoula in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

As he pulled back into the right lane, he was driving at a very slow speed when another 18-wheeler driven by Jimmy Bennett, 59, of Florence, MS, struck him from behind.

The force of the impact caused the trailer portion of Nelson's truck to crush him inside the cab portion.

Nelson, who was pronounced dead on the scene, was wearing a seat belt and is not suspected of alcohol use, according to police.

Bennett, who received minor injuries, was also wearing his seat belt and after submitting to a breathalyzer was not suspected of alcohol use.
