Four metro area high schools have made a Newsweek list of 1,000 top public high schools in the nation.

Benjamin Franklin High School in New Orleans ranks 76th on the list released this week by Newsweek and TheDaily Beast web site. Franklin also made the list last year, at number 27 of the top 500 schools.

Jefferson Parish has three schools on this year's list: Patrick F. Taylor Science and Technology Academy (coming in at 141), Haynes Academy for Advanced Studies (208) and Thomas Jefferson in Gretna (395).

The top school in the nation is The Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky.

'This year our ranking highlights the best 1,000 public high schools in the nation the ones that have proven to be the most effective in turning out college-ready grads,' Newsweek said in its article.

The magazine says the list is based on six components provided by school administrators: graduation rate, college matriculation rate, AP/IB/AICE tests taken per student, average SAT/ACT scores, average AP/IB/AICE scores, and AP courses offeredper student.
