NEW ORLEANS -- A faithful pooch struck by a bullet protecting his family is out of the hospital and back at home.

After 36 hours of surgery, veterinarians were able to save Zeus. The doberman was shot in the mouth by an intruder about two weeks ago.

His owners couldn't afford the thousands of dollars in medical bills for his surgery. That's when the Humane Society of Louisiana stepped in, collecting donations locally and across the country to help out.

'It just lets me know that people are still good. You hear a lot of bad things that go on in the world, but there are a lot of good people. Times like this they really came together, and I'm just thankful and grateful,' said Henry McCaskill, the dog's owner.

Once Zeus' medical bills are paid for, his owner says the remaining money will go towards helping dogs across the state who've been victims of abuse or neglect.
