LAFAYETTE, La. -- The Lafayette Police Department has confirmed that the body found earlier this week in Evangeline Parish is that of Mickey Shunick.

Corporal Paul Mouton of the LPD confirmed the news Thursday afternoon. He said there would be no further comment from the department on the matter.

Detectives discovered Shunick's body, along with clothing and jewelry, Tuesday in a grave site near Ville Platte.

Shunick, a student at the University of Louisiana Lafayette, went missing on May 19. She was last seen riding a bike, which would turn up a few weeks later. Until Tuesday, her whereabouts were a mystery.

Authorities have arrested 33-year-old Brandon Scott Lavergne in the case. He's been charged with aggravated kidnapping and first-degree murder.

The Shunick family has not released a comment.
