JEFFERSON, La. - Deputies have arrested a man they say accidentally fatally shot another man while the two were handling a gun Wednesday night.
According to John Fortunato, a spokesman for the sheriff's office, Dru Lilley, 25, has been charged with one count of negligent homicide in connection with the shooting death of Garland Stockman, 35.
Fortunato said deputies were sent to Ochsner Hospital in Jefferson around 10:45 p.m. after a report of a man with a gunshot wound to the chest being dropped off at the hospital.
The victim, identified as Stockman, was rushed into surgery and pronounced dead a short time later.
Fortunato said investigators identified Lilley as the driver of the car that dropped off Stockman at Ochsner.
According to Fortunato, Lilley first said that he and Stockman were friends and that he was shot in New Orleans. He later changed that story and said that Stockman was shot while the two were handling a gun.
Lilley told investigators that the two men were in the 3500 block of Robertson St. in Metairie when Stockman pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and that the two began playing with it. Lilley said he took the gun from Stockman and that at some point Stockman hit the gun while holding it in his hand, causing it to discharge and hit Stockman in the chest.
According to Fortunato, Lilley said he tossed the weapon onto I-10 West between Causeway and Clearview.
