New developments in the investigation into the deadly shootings of two St. John Parish deputies in August. Eyewitness News has learned that one of the seven suspects charged in the case has pleaded guilty.

Chanel Skains, 37, admitted to being an accessory after the fact to attempted first degree murder. She will be sentenced at a later date. Her bond was set at $100,000.

The state has refused all charges against another suspect in the case.

Teniecha Bright, 21, will not be prosecuted for principal to attempted first degree murder. But, Bright is being held as a material witness.

She is expected to testify at a January 18 preliminary examination.

This morning, a third suspect, Kyle David Joekel, 28 pleaded not guilty to four counts of attempted first degree murder. He also faces two murder charges.

Also charged in the case, Terry Smith, 44, his two sons Derrick Smith, 22 and Brian Lyn Smith, 24 and Brittney Keith.

Brian Smith also faces two counts of first-degree murder.

Deputies Jeremy Triche and Brandon Nielsen were killed on August 16 in what authorities described as an ambush at a LaPlace trailer park. The initial shooting happened outside a Valero employee parking lot on Bayou Steel Road.

Two other deputies were wounded in the shootings.

A status hearing in the case is now set for December 14.
