One day after a federal grand jury indicted him on 21 counts, former Mayor Ray Nagin took to Twitter, with a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

About 1:30 p.m. Saturday, more than 24 hours after the indictment, Nagin tweeted:'Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. MLKJr.'

The tweet is the only public comment so far from the former mayor, now living in Texas, following his indictment.

The King quote is from his famous letter from a Birmingham jail, written in 1963.

Nagin has avoided most reporters and declined or ignored requests for interviews in recent years, instead communicating through Twitter, often retweeting articles or quotes.

On Friday, a few hours before charges were unveiled, Nagin retweeted a quote from pastor and motivational speaker JoelOsteen.

'You are closest to your victory when you face the greatest opposition,'read the Osteen message, which Nagin retweeted.

The 25-page indictment that came down just an hour or so later Friday included charges of conspiracy, bribery, conspiracy to commit money laundering and honest services wire fraud.

Nagin's defense attorney Robert Jenkins said he was not surprised by the contents of the indictment but was under the impression that Nagin could keep negotiating a plea into next week.

Jenkins said his client is in good spirits after the indictment was announced, believes he's innocent and is preparing to defend himself at trial.
