NEW ORLEANS -- A black swan that calls City Park home is recovering from a serious ankle injury.

Now park officials are suspecting foul play.

Normally 'Amanda' wouldn't be inside with a bandaged ankle. However, that is where the City Park black swan is now recovering.

'A sweet swan like this. We all are going to pour our heart into getting this swan up on her feet,' said Dr. Gregory Rich with The West Esplanade Veterinary Clinic.

Park officials say for several weeks now, 'Amanda' had been watching over six eggs inside the park's Sculpture Garden. On Saturday, a City Park police officer discovered her weak, unable to walk and with serious injuries to her ankle that included exposed bones.

The officer called Rich for help, who drove to the park to tend to the swan.

'She must have been out for two or three days not eating well, has an infection. We flushed out the joint, manipulated the bones back in place,' said Rich, who believes the swan's attacker wasn't another animal.

'We think that somebody jumped the fence, damaged the eggs. This particular situation I don't believe is an animal injury,' said Rich.

For this Metairie vet that has dedicated his life to helping animals, donating some of his services to help nurse 'Amanda' back to health -- its hard to imagine why someone would want to hurt a swan.

'Its extremely unnerving to think that somebody would take an animal that is doing them no harm at all and injure it,' sad Rich.

The vet says it could take two weeks or more for 'Amanda' to fully recover. City Park and NOMA are offering a $1,000 reward for anyone with information that leads to an arrest.
