HAMMOND, La. -- A Hammond man is dead after a car accident on Interstate 12 in Tangipahoa Parish Friday night.

State Police Troop L say the accident happened shortly after midnight in the westbound lanes of I-12, about half a mile West of the LA 445/ Robert Exit.

According to police, the vehicle, a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee, drifted off the right side of the roadway and began spinning, before hitting a tree with its left front side. Police say the vehicle then hit another tree with its rear end, ejecting a passenger, 74-year-old Henry Conley of Hammond, who was not wearing a seatbelt.

Police say two other passengers were wearing seatbelts and only sustained minor injuries.

At this point, police do not believe impairment or speed were factors in the crash, however, the investigation is ongoing.
