NEW ORLEANS A fire that started on a mattress displaced 38 apartment building residents Wednesday morning, according to the New Orleans Fire Department.
Just after 6:45 a.m., firefighters responded to an alarm at Magnolia Villas at 1801 Magnolia St.
Additional units were requested and 38 residents were evacuated when first responders saw smoke showing.
The origin was traced to a mattress in an apartment, and sprinklers contained the fire to that apartment, according to the NOFD. However, the entire building sustained water and smoke damage.
The fire was under control by 7:01 a.m. with the help of 22 firefighters and seven units.
The resident of the apartment of origin was transported by Emergency Medical Services to a local hospital for smoke inhalation, the NOFD said.
Other residents were evacuated due heavy water damage and Entergy having to cut the power, fire officials said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
