NEW ORLEANS The Coast Guard rescued two people from a sailboat after their sail and rigging were damaged, according to the Eighth District of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Around 3:20 a.m. Friday, an offshore supply vessel reported that a man and woman aboard a 36-foot sailing vessel were in distress and required assistance, officials said.

The Coast Guard sent a helicopter crew to the boat, which was approximately 50 miles southwest of Terrebonne Bay in the Gulf of Mexico.

The aircrew hoisted the pair aboard and administered first aid to the woman for a laceration on the leg, the Coast Guard said.

The helicopter brought the man and woman back to the air station when emergency medical personnel were waiting to transport them to Ocshner Medical Center in New Orleans.

The towing vessel is bring the sailing Bessel into Port Fourchon. The man an woman's conditions are unknown.
