NEW ORLEANS -- New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Ronal Serpas said many of his officers will be wearing cameras on their uniforms possibly by the end of this year.

Serpas told a City Council committee hearing Wednesday that the NOPD is buying hundreds of cameras for officers to wear on duty, calling the devices 'the future of American law enforcement.'

He said body cameras are a major step that other police agencies have embraced, both to protect the public and to forestall false complaints against officers.

The NOPD already has cameras in police cars.
