NEW ORLEANS -- A New Orleans mother is facing a charge of negligent homicide after police say she caused a wreck that killed her infant son back in July.

According to investigators, 23-year-old Jamie Mathis was driving with her 8-month-old son on July 26. Officials say the child was unrestrained and not in a car seat.

When Mathis lost control of her car and slammed head-on into a truck on the South 1-10 Service Road, the baby sustained injuries that caused his death.

Mathis is being held in Orleans Parish Prison.
