NEWORLEANS- The popular Bywater-Marigny eatery Mariza makes Esquire Magazine food writer John Mariani's list of the Best New Restaurants in America in 2013.

'Mariza is a leap of faith especially in tradition-bound New Orleans that challenges local chefs to go beyond what is safe without going overboard,' Mariani writes in his profile of the restaurant.

'In what's known as the Sliver by the River, an area hit hard but not totaled by Hurricane Katrina, Mariza, with its distressed-concrete walls, mile-high ceilings, and old woodwork, wears its scarred history proudly only a crystal chandelier lends a touch of the soigne.'

In particular, Mariani touts a few of the Chartres Street restaurant's dishes from Chef Ian Schnoebelen, including pappardelle with smoked duck breast and liver mousse, and pepperoni soup.

'And he knows enough to respect a fine fish right out of the Gulf by treating it with nothing more than a perfect grilling, a glossing of lemon vinaigrette, and a cool fennel salad,' Mariani says.

Mariza, located in the Rice Mill Lofts in the Bywater, is operated by Schnoebelen and general manager Laurie Casebonne. It opened in January. The pair also operates the French Quarter restaurant Iris.

Some of Esquire's other choices for Best New Restaurants this year include restaurants in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Washington, D.C., Boston and Chicago.

Last year, SoBou made Esquire's list of best new restaurants in 2012.
