PEARL RIVER, La. -- In September, 40-year-old Dewayne Pullens struggled to walk on his own and relied on his wife and two young daughters to help him with everyday tasks like eating.

Those were the effects of an incurable brain tumor he's been battling for almost a decade.

Today, Pullens is a different man, and it's because you supported his daughters' challenge to raise money for new chemo treatments, called Lemonade for Life, which has given them more time with their dad.

'Didn't realize how much the community would pull together. Battling it for nine years, it was overwhelming,' said Trisha Pullens, Dewayne's wife. 'Shocked, but in a good way that they all kind of pulled together for my family.'

After our story on the effort three months ago, more than $11,000 came in through increased lemonade sales, raffles, a softball tournament and donations large and small sent in from far and wide.

The money covered Pullens' new $1,100 treatments, which have improved his functions, and the cost of traveling to M.D. Anderson in Houston, where the family learned just before Christmas that the tumor had stopped growing.

'He's walking better ... he's starting to see a little bit better,' said Whitney Pullens, Dewayne's youngest daughter, 'Happy that he's getting better.'

'I appreciate them helping give me a little bit more time with my family,' said Dewayne Pullens.

The Pullens are hopeful the help and prayers for their family continue into 2014.

'Trying to get back to doing what I used to do,' said Dewayne, 'Like playing softball with my kids.'

Trisha said, 'I'm thinking it's going to be better, brighter days.'

You can find several raffles being held for the family on the Lemonade for Life Facebook page, where you can also make a donation.

The girls are still operating their stand on Josephine Street in Pearl River, when it's not too cold.
