NEW ORLEANS - The NOPD announced that it is investigating an alleged sexual assault complaint against former Saint Darren Sharper. The NOPD says the complaint was made on September 24.
WWL-TV sources tell us the alleged incident occurred in the Warehouse District.
Remi Braden, a spokesperson for the NOPD said, 'as with every case alleging sexual assault, information gathered is extremely sensitive and the top priority of the detectives is to protect the person who filed the complaint. Because this is an on-going criminal investigation, we cannot provide additional information at this time.'
The Orleans Parish District Attorney's Office has also confirmed that it has received the official report from the New Orleans Police Department but that it is still investigating.
'New Orleans police received a complaint from an alleged victim,'said DA spokesman Chris Bowman. 'The police referred the case to our office for consultation. The matter is currently under investigation and we will make no further comment on any matter under investigation.'
WWL-TV legal analyst Chick Foret said these felony allegations against Sharper are very serious and could carry significant time in prison if he is convicted.
'He was at the Seattle game last week as a commentator for the NFL Network,' Foret said. 'Today he's facing two counts of rape charges and he's been released on a $200,000 bond in California. And he has pending in New Orleans, in Orleans Parish in the District Attorney's office, an investigation, allegedly, for one count of simple rape. Mr. Sharper's life is passing in front of his very eyes today.'
This information comes after Los Angeles County Detectives arrested Sharper Friday night on two sexual assault charges, according to law enforcement officials in Los Angeles. Sharper has been accused in two sexual assaults, one in Oct. 2013 and the other in Jan. 2014. He posted a $200,000 bond following his arrest and his next court appearance is in February.
Sharper has been suspended indefinitely without pay from the NFL Network where he is a consultant. 'Darren has been suspended without pay until further notice, effective immediately,' a NFL Network spokesman said in a statement. For one month in August of 2012, Sharper was an analyst for WWL-TV.
The 38-year-old Sharper spent 14 years in the NFL as a safety. He played for three teams, the Green Bay Packers, the Minnesota Vikings and then the Saints. He was a five-time Pro-Bowl selection. Sharper was part of the Saints Super Bowl championship team in 2009. Following his second year with Saints in 2010, Sharper announced his retirment.
