SLIDELL, La. A 19-year-old man trying to elude police rammed his vehicle into two police cars several times all with an unrestrained three-month-old child in the backseat, according to the Slidell Police.
The incident occurred Thursday afternoon in a Slidell neighborhood. Police said that they had been looking for a stolen vehicle and had located it and a suspect, Jeovon Mitchell, standing nearby.
When police raced to the scene, Mitchell became alarmed, jumped in his Jeep and tried to get away. Police said Mitchell rammed into two police cars and got sandwiched between them and then began accelerating forward and backward into the police cars, forcing officers to jump out of the way.
A police office spokesman said officers were eventually able to open the door to the Jeep and take Mitchell into custody.
The spokesman said the officers then made a disturbing discovery, finding Mitchell's three-month-old son in the back seat of the car, without any type of child restraint. Police said the child suffered no injuries.
Also inside the car, police found several small bags of marijuana, leading officers to believe that Mitchell had been conducting a drug transaction prior to the arrival of police.
Mitchell now faces several charges including: Attempted first-degree murder, second-degree cruelty to a child, criminal damage, forgery, possession of marijuana, criminal damage, improper child restraint, resisting an officer with violence, aggravated flight from an officer, reckless operation and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and possession of a stolen vehicle. He is currently being held at the Slidell City Jail. Mitchell will eventually be transferred to the St. Tammany Parish Jail, where a bond will be set.
