NEW ORLEANS -- Louisiana State Police is investigating an attempted murder by a man under the Pontchartrain Expressway, after state troopers patrolling the area saw the altercation and intervened in the situation.

State police said Cleveland Bell, 35 of New Orleans, was arrested and booked for attempted murder, armed robbery and an active warrant for home invasion.

Around 1 a.m. Wednesday, state troopers were on vehicle patrol in plain clothes. Police said they saw two people involved in an altercation under the overpass at Calliope Street and Simon Bolivar Avenue.

Police said Bell pulled out a pistol and fired at the victim before fleeing into a nearby neighborhood.

They found Bell hiding under a house after setting up a perimeter around the area, they said. Police also found the weapon and crack cocaine in a vacant lot next to the house Bell was hiding under.

The incident is still under investigation.
