BURAS, La. ANew Orleans man died in a single-vehicle crash Monday in Plaquemines Parish, according to State Police.

Around 6 p.m., Joseph Chevis, 64, of New Orleans, died after he crashed his SUV on LA 23.

According to State Police, Chevis was driving south LA 23 near mile marker 23, when he went off of the left portion of the highway, reentered the highway, before going of the right portion of the highway.

The SUV went through a fence and hit an embankment, coming to rest in front of a home. Chevis suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead on the scene by the Plaquemines Parish Coroner's Office.

Chevis was not wearing a seat belt and impairment is not suspected, according to State Police. A blood sample was collected for a toxicological analysis. Those results are pending as this crash remains under investigation.
