While the mayor was touting his administration's accomplishments in his State of the City address Tuesday, business before the City Council remains at a standstill because two council members continue to boycott council meetings.

That's the subject of this week's Commentary by Eyewitness News political analyst and Gambit columnist Clancy DuBos.

Clancy DuBos / Eyewitness News Political Analyst

I've been covering city politics for almost 40 years, and in all that time I've never seen a more divided, more politically petty City Council.

For weeks now, two council members Cynthia Hedge-Morrell and Jon Johnson have boycotted council meetings. Their absence has prevented the council from establishing a quorum. And that means nothing gets done.

That's crippling for businesses or property owners in need of a variance or special permit, because often times there's a deadline beyond which an application fails automatically.

Apparently Hedge-Morrell and Johnson don't care about that. They say their absence is coincidental. I say, in politics, there are no coincidences.

But the blame doesn't fall solely those two. Their boycott is merely the latest episode in a long-running drama played out by all seven Council members. They've all been backstabbing each other, sniping at each other, and generally behaving like children for years.

All seven council members took an oath to put citizens' interests ahead of their own bruised egos and selfish political agendas.

Shame on all seven of them for not honoring that oath.

In the long run, they will all lose because voters have no tolerance for this kind of nonsense.
