BATONROUGE -- The road to Omaha and the College World Series will go through Baton Rouge for the LSU Tiger baseball team.
LSU (43-16) was awarded national seed no. 7 in the NCAA Baseball Tournament, meaning that the Tigers will stay home in the Super Regional should they win their regional.
The Tigers join Florida, UCLA, FSU, Baylor, Oregon, North Carolina, and South Carolina as the top seeds for the tournament in a SEC-rich lineup of favorites.
The high seeding comes a year after the Tigers were left out of the tournament altogether.
'I can't lie it's very special to be back,'said head coach Paul Mainieri. 'Obviously I felt very strongly that we deserved to be in the field last year. Last year when we had this selection show, it wasn't a very pleasant experience and I don't want to ever feel that again. I felt that we deserved it and I'll always feel that way.'
The seeding for the Baton Rouge Regional: 1. LSU, 2. Oregon State (38-18), 3. Belmont (39-22) and 4. University of Louisiana-Monroe (31-28). LSU will face UL-Monroe in the opening match-up and Oregon State will face Belmont. Both games are scheduled for Friday, starting at 2 p.m with Oregon State vs. Belmont and then LSU vs. ULM at 7 p.m.
The post-season bubble burst for two local schools Tulane and Southeastern, as neither school was offered a post-season slot in the tournament.
