GULF OF MEXICO -- The Coast Guard has recovered the body of the pilot of a helicopter that crashed into the Gulf of Mexico, according to Petty Officer 3rd Class Stephen Lehmann.

The helicopter crashed into the Gulf of Mexico water around 4 p.m. Monday, and it wasn't until 8 p.m. that his body was recovered. Lehmann said a Good Samaritan assisted the Coast Guard in finding the helicopter and body.

The cause of the crash, which happened roughly 35 miles southwest of Grand Isle, is under investigation.

A 45-foot response vessel was sent out of Grand Isle to look for the helicopter, owned by PHI, Inc., and another Coast Guard helicopter was sent out of New Orleans for the search.

Coast Guard officials say only one person -- the victim -- was on board. He has not been identified.

The helicopter is used to ferry workers to and from the oil rigs and platforms.
