BELLE CHASSE, La. - A driver died on the Westbank after slamming his car into the rear of an 18-wheeler, according to Troop B of the Louisiana State Police.

Around 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Stephen Emerson, 33, of Gretna, was driving his 2007 Toyota Camry north in the right lane of LA-23 as he approached the Belle Chasse Bridge near South Tunnel Road.

The 2002 Freightliner and trailer, driven by James McCord, 49, of Alabama, was stopped in the same same lane due to traffic congestion from the bridge closure.

Emerson ran his car into the 18-wheeler and was pronounced dead on the scene, according to police.

Seat belts were worn by both drivers and speed is not suspected as a factor.

Toxicology results are pending for both drivers.
