SLIDELL, La. - A 25-year-old Slidell man accused of bludgeoning his parents to death will no longer face the death penalty.

John Willis pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to two counts of first degree murder in connection to the death of his parents Louis Willis, 62, and Helen Willis, 58.

In November 2011, an argument at the Willis' home escalated and ended when he beat his parents to death with a hammer, according to investigators.

John Willis is in the St. Tammany Parish jail on a $1 million bond.
