METAIRIE, La. The New Orleans Saints and punter Thomas Morstead agreed to a six-year extension Thursday, keeping one of the league's most valuable special teams players in the Crescent City until 2018.

He had one year left on his rookie contract.

The extension is worth $21.9 million and, according to his agent, Vann McElroy, the $3.65 million per-year-average over the final six years will make him the second-highest paid punter in the NFL behind Oakland's Shane Lechler.

Morstead averaged 48.3 yards per punt in 2012, a career best. He also led the NFL with 68 touchbacks.

One of the team's best social media users, Morstead took to Twitter almost immediately, writing, '#WhoDatNation Y'all are stuck with me for the next 7 years. I am humbled, honored and blessed to be here... Thanks for all your love.'
