TAFT, La. A chemical reaction situation that was monitored by St. Charles officials overnight was deemed not a threat on Friday morning.

The incident involved an explosive chemical at the Dow Chemical Plant in Taft.

A rail car filled with methyl vinyl ether was inside the plant's lines.

Scott Whelchel, director of emergency preparedness in St. Charles Parish, said there was no need for evacuations.

Whelchel said the worst-case scenario would involve some sort of ignition of the material, but said that it would be unlikely and would be localized, not threatening nearby residents.
