Time Magazine has named NFLComissioner Roger Goodell one of its candidates for 2012's Person of the Year.

Time's blurb on Goodell points to NFL's rising popularity during his tenure and increased revenue, as well as his focus on player safety -- a prickly subject for most Saints fans following the offseason bounty scandal.

'Now, after evidence has emerged that head contact sustained in football could be responsible for long-term brain damage, Goodell is preaching player safety: he has enacted rule changes that seek to prevent dangerous hits and went so far as to suspend the coach of the New Orleans Saints, Sean Payton, for an entire season because of the team's bounty program.'

Voters help decide who is chosen for the magazine's cover. The guidelines say voters should pick 'the person you think most influenced the news this year for better or worse.'

At the time this article was published, Goodell had a tough hill to climb -- 95 percent of voters said 'no way'he should be chosen.

There are currently 40 candidates listed on Time's site for the cover.
