TANGIPAHOA PARISH, La. A man recently elected to the Amite Council was arrested for driving while intoxicated a few days before 2013, according to police records.

Arthur Leonard Jr., 48, who will be sworn in as a councilman for District 1 Tuesday, was arrested and charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated and driving with an expired license plate, according to State Police records.

On Dec. 28, Leonard was driving his Mercedes when he was stopped at a Louisiana State Police checkpoint on Highway 51 around 12:15. He was arrested and placed in the Amite Jail about 30 minutes later, according to State Police records.

He bonded out of jail the same day on a $2,000 bond, according to police.

Officials said the DWIwas for drug impairment

Leonard declined to comment on the arrest, but added that he planned to go forward with his position on the council.
