NEWORLEANS - New Orleans police are investigating a shooting that sent a 36-year-old woman to the hospital in critical condition Monday night.

It happened around 9 p.m near a busy stretch of Magazine Street, two blocks away from the Second District police headquarters.

The victim was leaving a friend's house in the 800 block of Milan Street when she was approached by a person who shot her in the neck.

Neighbors are shocked and said that this kind of violence does not occur in the area.

'Highly unusual for this to happen in this neighborhood, especially around here in this block, because there's more of like an established neighborhood, everybody knows everybody,' said Gerald LaRocca, an Uptown resident.

Police have not released information on a suspect or motive.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers at 822-1111.
