COVINGTON, La. A 51-year-old pedestrian died due to injuries sustained when an impaired driver hit her in a Covington subdivision Sunday night, according to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office.

Around 8:30 p.m., the sheriff's office received a 911 call from William Marshall Seither Jr., the 21-year-old driver. He reported the crash on Carroll Drive in the Normand Oaks subdivision.

When officials arrived on scene, the pedestrian, Lisa Pitre, was rushed to St. Tammany Parish Hospital and was ultimately transported to LSU Interim Hospital in New Orleans. She remained in critical condition until she died Monday afternoon.

During the initial investigation, deputies suspected Seither was impaired when he hit Pitre with his 2001 blue Ford Focus.

Seither admitted to drug use earlier in the evening, deputies said. He submitted to a field sobriety test and had his blood drawn.

Based on his level of impairment at the scene, Seither was arrested for DWI, careless operation and first degree vehicular negligent injury. Impairment and speed are believed to be contributing factors in the crash, according to the STPSO.

Upon Pitre's death, deputies secured a warrant for Seither on an additional charge of vehicular homicide. He was rebooked with the new charge.

The toxicology report of Seither's blood is pending.
