NEWORLEANS-- The New Orleans area saw historic flooding 18 years ago on May 8, 1995, an event now known simply as The May Flood.

Carl Arredondo said it came in about two bouts of rain on the 8th and 9th in the morning, and the evening of the 9th and 10th. There was about 40 hours of rain in total.

44,000 homes were flooded and there were more than $3 billion in damages. There were eight fatalaties.

About 10 to 20 inches of rain fell across most the area. The highest amount was about 27 inches rain in Hancock County.

Two tornadoes were reported in the area.
