HARVEY, La. - The 'Click It or Ticket' seat belt safety campaign kicked off on Monday.

The federal government and a number of states, including Louisiana, launched a safety belt crackdown that runs through June 2.

The driver and all passengers are required to wear a seat belt, even if they're sitting in the back seats.

Local law enforcement will be on high alert for seat-belt violations.

During 2012's campaign, officers issued more than 13,000 tickets for seat belt violations.

The national public awareness campaign was launched when research showed that seat-belts saved thousands of lives and prevented countless injuries.

In 2012, seat-belts saved 12,000 lives across the nation, according to officials.

Louisiana is below the national average. About 79 percent of drivers use seat-belts in Louisiana, and about 86 percent of drivers use seat-belts nationally.

Those aged 18-34 are the least likely to buckle up.

Eleven people were killed during Memorial Day weekend in 2012
