NEWORLEANS- A downtown hotel was full of pink and plastic Saturday, for a huge Barbie doll convention.
More than 800 Barbie collectors and sellers are in New Orleans for their annual national convention, which was held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. The event was opened to the public on Saturday.
The gathering allows Barbie fans to get a glimpse of some of the vintage dolls in the marketplace, including a group modeled after Hollywood stars and characters like Jeannie from 'I Dream of Jeannie,' Samantha from 'Bewitched' and one modeled after Farrah Fawcett, in her famous red swimsuit.
One collector and seller here this weekend, Sandi Holder, holds the record for the most money made off of one Barbie sale - $27,500.
'I love Barbie because she epitomizes everything a girl can be,' explained Holder. 'She's been president, she's been an astronaut, she's been a teacher and she has such high quality fashion that little girls and moms alike can have a hobby together, which is very special.'
Holder explained that her own interest in Barbie began with her young daughter. Collecting then became a hobby of Holder's before she turned it into a business.
Collectors and sellers also got the chance to have their Barbies appraised at the convention.
