NEWORLEANS-- Robert Meachem, who was originally drafted by the Saints in 2007, will return to the club after signing a one-year deal, General Manager Mickey Loomis announced Tuesday.

The news came on the same day that reports surfaced saying that linebacker Jonathan Vilma would be placed on a short term injured list, causing him to miss at least the first seven games.

Meachem returns to the Saints after originally joining the club in 2007 as the club's first-round draft pick (27th overall). The 6-2, 215-pound former Tennessee standout, who played for the San Diego Chargers in 2012, has played in 77 career regular-season games all but 15 of them with the Saints with 28 starts, and has posted career totals of 155 receptions for 2,476 yards with 25 touchdown grabs.

In addition, a report by Ian Rapoport of NFL.com says that Saints will place LBJonathan Vilma on the Injured Reserved list, but that he will be eligible to return after 7 weeks.
