LAPLACE, La. -- A woman survived a crash on Interstate-55 after her vehicle went off the elevated portion of the roadway and into the water. The crash occurred three miles before Ruddock before 8 a.m. Thursday.

The recovery of the car closed several lanes of the interstate for several hours.

According to State Police, Arielle Fleming, 20, of LaPlace, lost control of her car when she saw a car ahead slow down. She drove over a railing and went into the water upside down.

'The nearly 30-foot drop caused the vehicle to overturn and come to rest in the water partially submerged. Due to being properly restrained at the time of the crash, Fleming was able to safely exit the vehicle and be rescued by a nearby fishing vessel,' said Trooper Nick Manale, a spokesman for State Police.

After Fleming was able to get out of the car herself, she sat on the bumper of the car until the boater picked her up, State Police said. She was taken to River Parishes Medical Center with minor injuries.
