NEWORLEANS-- A Baton Rouge native and New Orleans epidemiologist is being recognized by the White House for her work in public health and prevention.

Erica Washington, an epidemiologist with the Louisiana Office of Public Health in New Orleans, was recently selected as a part of the White House Champions of Change. The program recognizes 'ordinary people doing extraordinary in their communities,' according to the White House website.

Washington, a graduate of LSU and Tulane University, told WAFB, 'I'm so excited. The first person I called was my mother. I said, 'We're going to the White House.''

She is being recognized for her work as a healthcare associated infections coordinator, assisting hospitals in reporting and complying with federal regulations.
