NEW ORLEANS Police arrested 23-year-old Thomas Lam in connection with the murder of Helene Jackson and the shooting of her four-year-old grandson, according to the New Orleans Police Department.

Lam was arrested Friday, five days after allegedly shooting Jackson, 44, and her grandson in the 13000 block of Maple Wood Drive in New Orleans East, according to police. Her grandson remains in the hospital from the shooting.

A statement from NOPD said tips and information from witnesses in the neighborhood led Detective Ryan Vaught to identify Lam as a suspect. Motives were robbery and drug related, according to police.

Around 3 p.m., Lam was arrested at work in the 5000 block of Bragg Street.

Lam refused to cooperate with detectives, according to police. A search of his home by detectives yielded a handgun.

'This was another case where a suspect recklessly fired a weapon -wounding anyone who happened to be in his path, including a 4-year-old boy. Criminals like this don't deserve to walk freely among us in our neighborhoods', said Superintendent Ronal Serpas.

Lam was booked with first-degree murder, according to the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office.
