NEW ORLEANS -- New Orleans police are investigating a hit-and-run accident on Interstate 10 that left an Alabama man dead Tuesday night.

Around 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, a 43-year-old man attempted to cross I-10 west on foot just before the Chef Menteur exit ramp. He was struck by one or more vehicles that fled the scene.

The victim died on the scene, and his identity has not been released. An autopsy will be done to determine the exact cause of death, and blood and alcohol tests are pending.

Investigators found the passenger's side mirror of a Ford SUV on the scene, and are trying to determine the registered owner of the vehicle. Detectives belive the SUV's front passenger's side received heavy damage.

Anyone with information regarding this case is urged to call Edgar Edwards at 658-6208.
