NEWORLEANS-- Police are investigating the incident of a woman who apparently shot herself and drew fire from a responding officer, according to police.

Around 8 a.m., police were called to a home in the 2800 block of Laurel Street for a threat of suicide. A 38-year-old woman was in the driveway of the home. Police said officers were talking with the woman when she pulled a gun from a van.

According to police, the woman fired her gun and one officer returned fire. Police don't believe the officer hit the woman, but she died at the scene from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The death is currently being ruled a suicide, but it is under investigation because an officer fired a weapon at the scene, police said.
