NEW ORLEANS -- Sen. Mary Landrieu is pushing for a vote on a bill to prevent astronomical increases in flood insurance rates.

Eyewitness News sat down with Landrieu on Wednesday. She's among a bipartisan group of senators and representatives backing the Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act.

One goal of the bill is to delay sky-high increases on national flood insurance policies. In Louisiana, some rate hikes would be as high as $18,000 a year.

Landrieu said there's a lot of support for the bill, but Congress needs to take it up soon.

'I hope we can get our leadership both in the House and the Senate to agree, to allow us to get a vote on this bill to move it forward, either a stand alone or connect it to something that has to pass like the defense authorization bill,' she said.

So far, there's no timeline for a vote on the bill.
