NEW ORLEANS, La. Three deputies who opened fire and killed a man believed to have just fatally stabbed his girlfriend will not be put on administrative leave because they did their job, Sheriff Newell Normand said Tuesday.

Deputies responding to a call for help Saturday night went to a Pier Avenue address in Metairie and said they found 26-year-old Jessica Broussard stabbed several times and a number of eyewitnesses who directed them to the home of 29-year-old Noah Scott.

Normand said that in a short period of less than two minutes, Scott brandished a knife while officers ordered him to put it down. Normand said Scott lunged at the officers and they fired off several rounds, striking Scott 29 times, killing him.

Normand said Tuesday that the officers who were involved did not need to be put on leave and said it would be 'disingenuous' to do that when the deputies were just doing their jobs.

Scott, according to Normand, also had signs that he had wanted to take his own life marks on his neck and gas stoves that had been turned on inside the home.
